Dear Colleagues and Psychology Students,
Anxiety disorders remain one of the most prevalent and debilitating categories of mental health conditions encountered in clinical practice. As professionals and researchers, it is imperative that we move beyond basic symptom checklists and deepen our understanding of the complex neurobiological mechanisms driving these disorders.
I recently published a comprehensive feature article on Psychology Roots titled, "The Neurobiology and Treatment of Anxiety Disorders." This piece is designed as an academic resource to synthesize current research findings with evidence-based treatment strategies.
In this article, I explore:
-
A Clinical Typology: A rigorous overview of the key anxiety disorders, including Panic Disorder, PTSD, OCD, and GAD.
-
Neurobiological Mechanisms: An analysis of the crucial roles played by neural circuits involving the amygdala and the hippocampus in the generation and regulation of fear.
-
Evidence-Based Care: A critical review of validated therapeutic modalities, examining the efficacy of specific pharmacological interventions (such as SSRIs) and the application of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and systematic exposure techniques.
It is my hope that this synthesis provides valuable insights for students looking to strengthen their foundational knowledge and for clinicians seeking to refine their evidence-based practice.
I invite you to read the full analysis and share your perspectives or questions on how recent neurobiological findings are shaping your clinical approach.
