Harlow’s monkey experiment illustrated the importance of physical contact to development. Harlow compared infant monkeys’ attachment to a surrogate mother made out of cloth or one made of wire that was attached to a bottle so “she” could feed the baby. He found the infant monkeys preferred the soft “mothers.” His study did not involve language or tools. Even though the infant monkeys were separated from their natural parents, the goal was not to study the impact of that separation, and the study also did not look at the heritability of shyness.
