Hi everyone,

Human connection relies so heavily on shared understanding, but as clinicians and researchers, quantifying that capacity for empathy can be a complex challenge.

I wanted to open up a discussion about the Empathy Quotient (EQ), developed by Simon Baron-Cohen and his team. While it’s widely known for its application in assessing social cognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), its utility in establishing behavioral baselines and understanding typical temperamental variations is just as fascinating.

I recently put together a comprehensive breakdown of how the EQ bridges the gap between abstract psychological concepts and measurable clinical data. It covers both the cognitive and affective components of the assessment.

You can read the full deep-dive here: The Clinical Value of the Empathy Quotient: Understanding Social Intelligence

I’d love to hear from others in practice or research:

  • How often do you incorporate the EQ (or similar tools) into your diagnostic protocols?

  • Do you find self-report measures for affective empathy to be consistently reliable in your specific clinical populations?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
